It’s only the first of June, but already the month is looking full of activity.

After quickly finishing my morning mug of espresso and biking up Dufferin to the new Tightrope offices on St. Clair, I found my body skipping to keep with my heart. Things are heating up, and it’s hard not to notice a collective surge of energy as we break out of the rainy monotony of May.

Tensions are also high at The Griffin Poetry Prize as they prepare to announce this year’s winners at their gala event tonight. Those who made the Canadian shortlist include Dionne Brand, Suzanne Buffam, and John Steffler.

The Trillium Book Awards are also looking towards their season finale as they’ll soon to announce their winners. Four titles were short-listed for the Trillium Book Award for Poetry in English, which include Dani Couture, Jeff Latosik, Shane Neilson, and Peter Norman. Selected poems by Dani Couture, Shane Neilson, and Peter Norman have been featured in The Best Canadian Poetry in English series.

The Canadian League of Poets will also announce soon the winner of both the Pat Lowther Memorial Award, for women poets, and the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award, which recognizes new writers on the Canadian scene. Tightrope’s own, Anna Swanson, is up for this award for The Nights Also, and we again wish her the best of luck.

Congratulations to all the nominees.

With the sun at its peak, cool off with some poetry; listen to Dionne Brand read from her work thirsty.
