Tightrope Books’ May launch is right around the corner! In preparation of that, this Tuesday’s teaser will be from Anna Swanson’s new poetry collection The Nights Also. Swanson’s poetry leads you through a life that tries to deal with a misunderstood illness, a gradual acceptance of one’s sexuality, and a sometimes onorous relationship with nature.

Here’s the first part of “Medusa’s lullaby” from The Nights Also:

Medusa’s lullaby

Medusa, the snakes whisper,
listen, we are making that sound
you love. The sound,
you say, that gives you dreams
of fallen leaves and dead flowers
and the dry hand of someone
who used to be your lover.

Medusa, they whisper,
curling behind her ears
and under her chin
for warmth,
you are still
so young. And already
you have learned to dance
when you are frightened.

Now, let your body be loose,
Medusa. Your cells
are so tightly attached,
relax, move your hips
in circles, move your neck
in circles, let your spine
become sinuous
like us. Soon your skin
will follow, shift
against itself
as you dance.

… …

To read the rest of “Madusa’s lullaby” and to read the rest of Anna’s complex yet honest poems, go HERE to buy The Nights Also or come to the launch on Thursday May 20th. Listen to Anna read from her book and buy yourself a copy to be signed!
