Even though she’s a small-press publisher, Halli Villegas of Tightrope Books isn’t worried about getting lost in the shuffle. The upstart Toronto press is preparing for its largest season ever — six titles — and contends that, even for the smallest press, “fall is when you bring out your big guns.”

“[Bookstores] still want to see what you’re bringing out in the fall. That’s a marker of who you really are putting your money behind,” she says. There are two levels in the book business, she says, and dismisses the idea they compete with the Atwoods and Munros of the industry. “We’ve got our target market, too, and they deserve to have our big guns out in the fall.”
